ReDI Career Track: User-Centered Design

Course Overview

Welcome to the exciting world of Product Design!

Have you ever wondered who is key to visualizing what software should look like?

Wonder no more. That person could be you! 

Learn to think like a designer with this introduction to User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design. Through hands-on exercises leading up to a final project, you will gain practical skills, experience and confidence designing digital products that are intuitive, engaging, and user-friendly.

Learn the fundamentals of color theory, typography, iconography, layout, content structure, and user-centered design in a project-based approach.

This is the introductory course in our User-Centered Design Track.

  • Part 1: User Experience (UX)

    • UX Design basics

    • Introduction to User-Centered Design

    • Problem statements and hypothesis

    • Conduct user research, surveys, interviews + identify user needs and goals.

    • Information architecture + site maps

    • Empathy Map, Personas, Competitor Analysis

    • Navigation Theory

    • Interaction Design

    • Portfolios Q&A

    Part 2: User Interface (UI)

    • UI Design basics

    • Visual Design, Responsive Design

    • typography, color theory, and layout, to create effective and engaging digital products

    • Using Figma for Design and Prototyping Practice

    • Wireframing + Prototyping + Usability Testing

    • Design ethics + Accessibility

    • Analytics

    • Preparing your work for handoff (to the developers)

    • Applying what we learned to creating a Final Project

    • You are interested in design thinking, and how a product that starts as a user-need is conceived, designed, prototyped, tested and validated

    • You are familiar with basic computer terminology

    • You are confident with using a computer, creating files and folders, and browsing the web

    • You are looking for a basic course to start your journey into Web Design

    • You can commit at least 10 hours a week (classes + self-study), 80% attendance of the course is required for graduation

    • You can commit at least 8 hours for career workshops or trainings during the semester

    • You are able to understand and speak English

    • You are able to understand the different stages of UX/UI Design:

      • You can define the problem space, and understand the user-centric need

      • You will deliver a design outcome of a simple Website or mobile application

      • You will explore creativity and technical skills using Figma

      • You will have learned various tools and techniques for investigating, and designing and developing a prototype

    • You will deliver a design outcome of a simple website in a presentation to your class

    • You will explore creativity and technical skills using Figma

    • You are prepared to continue with the UX/UI Design Intermediate course for the User-Centered Design Track

    • Career & Soft Skills Workshops, Company Visits

    • ReDI Mentorship Program (mentors in the IT industry)
